Paragraph right before Sect 2.5.1. Replace entire paragraph/sentence with

Note that, due to subtleties in the theory, non-relativistic chart relationships are most easily, and best considered at this point, expressed in Cartesian coordinates, where xi → Xi and pi = pi.

Box 2-2. My purpose in this box was to give a derivation of (B2-2.3) that was much simpler than that in other books. There are some subtleties involved, but it is best not to worry about them until after you have mastered QFT. If at that time, you feel up to it, check out Box2_2_comments

25-26

June 12, 2015

Line above (2-28) delete the minus sign after the equal sign.

In (2-29), delete the minus sign before “i”.

2

June 16, 2015

(2-42) and (2-43): On RHS, insert  (Cartesian system, where p j = pj = 3-momentum)

(Correction posted on June 12, 2015 for these equations has been removed and replaced with this one.)

34

July 16, 2014

First line after (2-55). After “13.)”, insert  Note from (2-55) that p^0 = gamma mc = E/c, where E is relativistic energy, and p^i = relativistic 3-momentum.

Eq (3-3). The subscript “i” on pi should be a superscript.

2nd line of text below (3.34), “(… Hermitian)”, should be  (… Hermitian conjugate) . Same thing on pg. 50, just above (3-36).

Prob. 3. Change “of negative unity” to  is negative . One would have to assume a magnitude of unity, which would make sense if the value were positive.

4

Aug 27, 2014

Eq (4-27) was not explained clearly. On the RHS the integral is zero for p not = zero, but is V for p = 0. The spinor inner product in front of the integral is zero for p = 0. So, in any case, (4-27) is zero.

It may be cumbersome keeping track of terms between (7-110) and (7-111). See From (7-110) to (7-111), which should help shortcut the tedium in doing so.

Prob. 3. Subscript C1 should be C2..

Jimmy Snyder

11

June 19, 2014

Paragraph including (11-8) and (11-9): delete this paragraph and the associated margin note.

The sign on E^2 in (11-8) is wrong and thus (11-8) does not equal the negative of energy density. This paragraph was as aside (not part of the theory development) and was intended to be a simple and intuitive insight into the LHS of (11-8). Unfortunately, the issue is neither simple nor intuitive, but delving into it in proper depth would take us off on a tangent away from the focus of the chapter.

Above (11-40), add a footnote: The term “gauge covariant derivative” is different from, and should not be confused with, the “covariant derivative” of general relativity (and more generally, tensor analysis). It is unfortunate that similar nomenclature is used for the two cases. In the QFT we are studying, spacetime is flat (Minkowski space) and we use a Lorentz metric, so the covariant derivative of GR has Christoffel symbol of zero. This is made more confusing by the common dropping of the word “gauge” in QFT when referring to the gauge covariant derivative. You often have to glean the meaning from context.

Prob. 9. To make things a little easier to understand: In 2nd line insert  fermion  before “field”. At end of last line, insert “Note that .”

Sect 16.4.6, Step #2 was not very clear. The revision, Sect 16.4.6 revision, should be considerably easier to understand. Note that Prob. 9 in this chapter is now deleted, as it related to material in Sect. 16.4.6 that was removed in this revision.

Holger Teutsch

Prob. 2 can be expressed more clearly with the following changes. 4th line: change “=” to  goes to . Same line: after “interactions” insert  , since there is no gμν in the scalar propagator .

Prob. 3: The hint actually makes it more difficult. Do not express momentum as shown. Replace the hint with:

“Use , a similar relation for particle #2, and the 3-momentum balance equation [where total 3-momentum is zero in the COM] to find . Divide this by the energy balance equation. Then add and subtract the energy balance equation from your result. “

Chap. 18 has some spots that needed more extensive explanations, and in one section, had a missing constant through several equations. The revised pages can be found at Chap 18 revised pgs. Red font indicates changed material. Note that the former appendix added little and has been replaced with a new appendix, which compares and contrasts the NRQM background for the path integral approach as handled by different texts.
